Habitat for Humanity

Who Qualifies for a Habitat Home?  It is not easy!

Families and individuals in need of decent, affordable housing apply for homeownership with their local Habitat for Humanity.  As part of their willingness to partner, Habitat’s homebuyers invest hundreds of hours of their own labor, called sweat equity, working alongside volunteers and other Habitat homeowners.  Habitat for Humanity follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing Habitat’s homeowners.

In addition, homeowners commit to a 25-year mortgage (with 0% interest rate).   They DO pay a monthly mortgage for the value of the home – which then “pays it forward” to fund additional homeownership opportunities.

Each local Habitat’s family selection committee selects homeowners based on three criteria:

  • The applicant’s level of need.
  • Their willingness to partner with Habitat.
  • Their ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan.

This year, the homebuyers are the SMITH Family.

On December 16th of this year, we will start our sixteenth Habitat house for the Smith family in Gainesville.  The Smith Family build is off to a great start thanks to the many St Brigid volunteers.  Thank You!!!

We still have a limited number of Saturday volunteer opportunities available.   Please consider lending a hand one Saturday – – no experience necessary.

Young adults 16-17 can participate with a parent on-site with them and completion of a parental approval form.   Anyone over 18 simply needs to complete an online form.

More about the Smith family ….. Nykia and her two daughters, Laneeka, 24, and Johnae, 20, moved from St Croix Virgin Islands to Cumming in 2019 after Hurricane Maria ravaged their home.  They felt alone and devastated dealing with the trauma of being displaced from their home, along with family and friends.  In addition, she lost her father and cousin to COVID.

The relocation to Georgia was challenging, moving to and from various apartments as they sought affordable housing.  Through it all, Nykia never lost her will to succeed for her family.  She currently works for Northside Hospital Forsyth as a Clinical Care Associate after earning a Medical Assistant degree.

Daughter Laneeka attends a program at Creative Enterprises in Cumming, which provides job placement as well as social and life skills for individuals with disabilities.   Johnae is attending Lanier Technical College.  Nykia, Laneeka, and Johnae enjoy attending bible study, working with youth groups, and doing missionary work.  When not volunteering, all three enjoy baking and gardening.

Nykia Smith and her daughters have expressed their sincere appreciation for your financial donations and dedication of your time.
